Mr. Jones, as he is now called pending the discovery of his true identity. The tattoo under his lip is somewhat obscured by what appears to be an old injury. He is a small bay gelding. But, to borrow a line from Shakespeare “Though he is small, he is but fierce!” Mr. Jones injuries and pushy nature are consistent with winners that have made their mark on the track.

Berkeley Square, known as Berk, arrived at Spring Lake early in 2010. Initially Berk came from Tampa Bay Downs through Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT) who determined they would not keep him in their transition program as his layup time was anticipated to be more than a year. Spring Lake accepted Berk into their long term care program rather than sending him away. Berk is chestnut color, stands about 16 hands and we like to call him "Mr. Personality" here on the farm. Berk suffered a rotation to the coffin. He is in need of support for long term care, specialized Farrier care and shoes. Please join the fundraiser here.

Tre Cool, known as Tre, originally came to Spring Lake Equestrian Center off the track from Tampa Bay Downs through Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT). He is an absolutely wonderful horse. His brother is Birdstone, a 2004 Belmont Stakes winner who ruined Smarty Jones' chance at the Triple Crown. Birdstone is the sire of Mine That Bird (2009 Kentucky Derby winner) and Summer Bird (2009 Belmont Stakes winner) so Tre Cool is their uncle (if horses have uncles). Grindstone, the 1996 Kentucky Derby winner, is his sire.

Rosie is the sweetest little girl who would make a great first horse for an experienced rider. She stands at 15 hands. She came in with a chip in the right knee, but is sound. Rosie has a lot of energy and has joined Shezabay in polo training. Rosie is our little barn gossip. She has earned the title "Nosey Rosie" since she must talk to you every time someone comes in or goes out of the barn.

Sister Suave, known as Sissy, originally came to Spring Lake Equestrian Center off the track from Tampa Bay Downs through Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT). Sissy is an alumni of Spring Lake and was a pleasure to have here on the farm. We wish her the best.

Sissy is a wonderful 6 year old filly with lots of heart. She stands approximately 16 hands and has been retired since December 2009. Coming to us with a small knee chip, Sissy spent several months on stall rest and slowly rehabbing into a pasture.Sissy spent most of her days here turned out with fellow TROT horse "JJ" and would love to run and play, and had been under western saddle. Sissy is the grandaughter of "Silver Buck" and earned $52,238 in her racing career. She has 4 wins, 9 places, and 8 shows and earned over $50,000.

Guacaipuro, known as Guac, originally came to Spring Lake Equestrian Center off the track from Tampa Bay Downs through Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT). She was adopted and is an Alumni of Spring Lake. He was a pleasure to have here on the farm and we wish him the best.

Guac is a fun gelding with a lot of life and talent. He is a sound 6 year old gelding who has raced 34 times, with 4 wins and won over $32.000. Guac stands at 16 hands and is a bit strong; his only issue is that he has osslets on his front ankles (calcification around the joint) but other than being cosmetic, they do not affect his movement or comfort. With time and patience, he will make an amazing event or dressage horse.

Guac is the son of the great "Cryptoclearance"!

Shezabayferrari, known as Shezabay,

originally came to Spring Lake Equestrian Center off the track from Tampa Bay Downs through Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT). She was adopted and is an Alumni of Spring Lake.

Shezabay is a pretty little filly who is as sound as she can be. She is about 15.2 hands, bay, and classy. After an unsuccessful two starts, her owner decided to retire her from racing.

Here at the farm Shezabay was involved in polo training by Julia, a volunteer and former University of Michigan Polo Team Captain. Her training is from the ground up. This great filly is capable of doing many things is great under the saddle and responsive. Shezabay is a 10 mover and very intelligent and everything in one package.

On The Wings Of Trust

On the Wings Of Trust, known as Zorro, originally came to Spring Lake Equestrian Center through Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT) and is an alumni of Spring Lake. He is a big beautiful Dappled Grey gelding standing at about 15.2 hands. Zorro was always full of spunk and energy, and would make a lovely riding horse perhaps in lower level dressage. He is certainly a head-turner and should make any judge smile.

Feisty Duke, known as Duke, arrived at Spring Lake early in 2010 through TROT. Duke had a myriad of medical issues and needed specialized care for rehabilitation. When TROT determined they could no longer keep him in their transition program, as he would never be completely sound, Spring Lake accepted Duke into their long term care program. He is a wonderful horse and still has that get up and go. Due to several old racing injuries to his leg, he gets up but goes a little slower. Duke is in need of a surgical procedure and support for long term care. Please join the fundraiser here.

Open Lock, known as Lock, arrived at Spring Lake early in 2010 from Tampa Bay Downs through TROT as a long term lay-up having suffered a fracture to the fetlock joint. In his final race at Tampa Bay Downs, Lock courageously ran past the field maneuvering along the inside rail to take first place. He retired a champion at nine years old and had won over $250,000. Lock is also a real classy horse, has an extremely good nature with people and with other horses as well. Lock has a heart of gold and has healed relatively well where light riding is an option. Big Shot Dan

Big Shot Dan, known as Danny, a descendant of the legendary Secretariat, arrived at Spring Lake early in 2010 from Tampa Bay Downs through TROT. At the age of just two Danny suffered a significant injury to his knee and even after surgery to remove bones chips it was determined that he would never be completely sound. Spring Lake provided intensive day and night care, before and after surgery, including hand walking which was quite challenging due to the injury. When TROT determined they could no longer keep him in their transition program and it would be unlikely to find a suitable adopter, Spring Lake accepted Danny into their long term care program.

Danny is in need of specialized care to rehabilitate into a viable therapy or companion horse. Please join the fundraiser here.

Cinemud is an off the track thoroughbred who is an absolute pleasure to work with. He is chestnut color and has a white star on his forehead. Cine, who came from New Jersey, was taken in by Spring Lake Equestrian Center and has been adopted by Dara Dresden, a Florida resident. Cinemud's carrier led him to start twenty races where he won over ninety-thousand dollars. See his pedigree below.

We are happy to announce buy-out money was raised for #431. ABR and Camelot did a great job!

Buy Out Money Needed for #431 Immediately

We just received the word about #431 sold by Camelot and on his way to slaughter. Spring Lake Equestrian Center will take him in but we need your help right away to get the money for the buy-out. We will also need help with transportation to our farm and and a couple months of food until we can find a forever home.

Race Horse Retirement Accountability

It is most disturbing how perspective is skewed by money. In the case of the race horse who can no longer race, it is clear that when inhumane atrocities occur, those who profit disregard the very animal who paid for the bed they sleep in. This is not a just a sad story, it is reality. Slaughter houses who sell horses for meat inflict extreme pain and agony to the horses for prolonged periods of consciousness. When these horses bare their own sweat across the finish line, while money exchanges hands behind the cages, and the owners smile as shutters click, they never would have thought the very humans who rode them abandon their earned right to a humane existence and death with honor. Every country that these horses are shipped to, ships products into our country where the government makes money from import tax. So now our country is making money from people who allow this kind of treatment of horses. Taking responsibility like the Tampa Bay Downs HBPA does is big step in the right direction.

Wild Horse Roundups

It is most disturbing how perspective is skewed by money. In the case of the helicopter round up, it is clear that too many are profiting at the demise of the wild horse. This is not a just a sad story, it is reality. The helicopter pilots are getting paid by the BLM, who is getting paid for land leases. which cause a decrease in land for the wild horses to roam. The ranchers leasing the land are profiting from selling their livestock fed by this government land that tax payers pay for. So now, as tax payers, horse advocates are indirectly paying for this kind of treatment of horses.
